Benefits of Free Licensing @ Microsoft

After yesterday’s Windows 10 unveiling Microsoft took the time to talk about its device strategy for the foreseeable future.
Talking to Re/code’s Ina Fried, Terry Myerson said Microsoft has seen great success with their strategy of giving Windows away for devices smaller than 9 inches. This strategy was revealed early this year at
BUILD and

we knew it had been a success thanks to the slew of new device partners.
But going further, Terry Myerson mentioned that since they had announced this major change in licensing, 50 new companies have partnered up with Microsoft to build tablets and Windows Phone devices. Looking forward to the Windows 10 launch, Terry Myerson also stated that they see no reason to change this strategy.
And speaking of Windows 10, Microsoft hasn’t said anything yet about licensing and pricing but the company is obviously keen to push the OS in front of as many people as possible. Keeping this strategy in place will no doubt help and the rumored free upgrade to Windows 10 from older Windows versions may also entice many users to check out the company’s latest OS.
We’ll no doubt hear more as we get closer to the launch date of Windows 10 sometime towards mid-2015.
